I already have an accountant, surely it will be a hassle to change over?
No - it is straightforward. After we have met and agreed matters all you
need to do is write to the previous accountant and tell them that you
are appointing us (we'll even give you a draft letter if you need one).
We do all the rest including obtaining all the information we need from
the previous accountant. [back to top]

I am starting a new business and have loads of questions to ask. Help
?! Remember, we run our own business - we've been there too. We will
be happy to meet with you to help answer your questions. Our first meeting
will be free of charge. It is unlikely that you will have a problem that
we have not seen many times before. [back to top]

Should I run my business as a sole trader or set up a limited company
?
It depends on a number of things including: the profit that you expect
to make, your lifestyle (i.e. how much you will spend), your objectives
for the business, the risks involved in the business etc. The only way
to answer this is to sit down and look at all these matters and calculate
the figures on which you can then make a decision. [back

I want to set up a limited company. How do I go about it ?
We can do it all for you - just give us the details and we will deal direct
with company formation agents to set the company up. You will have a few
forms to sign (we'll fill them in for you) and that's all. Typical cost
for most new company set-ups is £300-£350 plus VAT depending on the work
involved, of which we pay about a third of that out to the formation agents.

Why should I use a Chartered Accountant ?
Anyone can set up in business and call themselves an Accountant - you
could do it! But most people want to have some comfort that the Accountant
they are dealing with has the necessary training and experience to advise
them properly. To become a CA you need to go through the training programme
of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (or the equivalent
institute in England and Wales), which involves practical work experience
and exams (usually covering a minimum of 3 years). Even then you cannot
set up your own business as a Chartered Accountant without going through
further hoops and obtaining a Practising Certificate. And if that isn't
enough the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland have in place
procedures to ensure that those CAs then continue to keep up to date and
remain suitable for practising as a CA. [back to top]

Why should I use Neilson Renton & Co ?
We see ourselves as normal, down to earth people working hard to help
our clients run profitable businesses so that we can make a living ourselves.
Both George and Callum trained with national firms of Chartered Accountants
and have built on that experience. We're approachable, we drink and we
go to the football (different teams!). Neither of us own a bowler hat
or drive a Jag; sometimes we don't even wear suits and ties - shock horror.
